Tonight’s the LIGHT Night!

Lightsabers, lava-lamps, roaming puppets, tie-dye body paint and a LED catwalk show are just some of the events organised for this year’s Light Night (it is their tenth birthday after all) taking place in the city tonight.

The full programme for the Robin Hood Energy-sponsored event is available online here or you can pick one up at the Tourism Centre at the Council House, and features a wide range of mainly free activities so you can save your pennies for some tasty nosh at the Secret Burger Club (which makes its Nottingham debut at the festival).

Here’s everything you need to know – including the full list of events taking place.

When is it and when does it start?

It’s today! Friday, February 10 from 3pm until 11pm and is part of  Festival of Science and Curiosity!

Where is it?

Where isn’t it more like? Around 50 venues are taking part and stuff is going on ALL OVER the city as is evident from this nifty Google Map with all the venues marked.

New this year will be a LED catwalk show at 6pm, 7pm and 8pm outside Hugo Boss on Bridlesmith Gate, in celebration of the upcoming Nottingham in Fashion event on Friday 24 and Saturday 25 March. The Arboretum will be transformed into “a garden of delights” with installations and roaming puppets and visitors will be able to take a candle-lit tour of the William Booth Birthplace Museum.

In the Old Market Square the Wheel of Nottingham will be turned into the Wheel of Light with a special illuminations show using 75,000 light bulbs.

There will be free entry to Nottingham Castle and Brewhouse Yard – and Sneinton Market will be having a steampunk makeover. Plus, citizens are invited to post their Light Night pictures on the website to be in with a chance of winning a prize – click here for details.

Get Curious – There’s Science in the City #FOSAC17

The Festival of Science and Curiosity kicks off in Nottingham on Thursday with a week of of events bringing Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Maths to the people of the city. The Festival of Science and Curiosity is now in its third year and is delivered by STEM CITY, as a partnership of science organisations, educational institutions and Nottingham City Council.

We believe that Science is creative, and that Science has to be part of our cultural lives – and not remote, hidden away, or only conducted in labs behind closed doors. On the Thursday and the Friday, the main focus is on schools. coming in to engage and interact with art and technology and the interplay between both. You’ll get to do things like science busking and learning how to code to create your own games. Then, at the weekend, there are loads of events happening in places like GameCity, Broadmarsh and Central Library!

The festival is about inviting the people of Nottingham to share not only what they know, but also what they would like to know. It’s about encouraging people to be curious, to ask questions and to engage in science as a cultural activity. So people of Nottingham – what do you want to know?  What do you want to find out? Telling Tall Tales with National Storytelling Week

2017 marks the 17th year of its Annual National Storytelling Week, which runs from 28th January~4th February. National Storytelling Week takes place in storytelling clubs, theatres, museums, schools, hospitals, spoken word venues, and care homes (where this event has been steadily growing each year!) National Storytelling Week is celebrated by all ages in the telling of folk and fairy tales, ripping yarns adventures, or just what you overheard on the number 68 bus to Bulwell. Anything can be a story but a good teller of stories will conjure it intriguingly and spin a web in which their audience become enthralled.

This week, why don’t you tell a story – in school or out. It can be one you’ve read in a book (perhaps borrowed from your local library), seen in a film or play, or one you make up yourself! You can also use it toward signing off a challenge when logged into the site. And, if you can’t find a story to tell, get someone else to tell you theirs and share it!

Go on – get creative and tell a story this week!
